The field of this chintz hanging is filled with beautifully drawn birds and flowers. The vase of flowers in the centre is taken from a European source and is decorated with a scene of 'Nature being crowned by Love'.

Rectangular palampore or bed-cover of painted and dyed cotton chintz, Coromandel Coast, ca. 1720-1750
Physical description
Rectangular palampore or bed-cover of painted and dyed cotton chintz. Composed of two selvage to selvage widths of cotton joined after painting. In the centre is a vase of flowers. There is a bunch of flowers tied with a ribbon in each corner. The field is filled with a tracery of stems bearing fanciful leaves and flowers, and interspersed with beautifully drawn birds. There is a wide border with a floral design, and two narrow guard borders with a ribbon design. Blue band around all four edges. The lower portion of the bottom border is missing.
