By the third quarter of the 18th century, Chinese design elements had come to dominate the flowering tree patterns that were typical of the Indian chintz furnishings sent to Europe. This hanging uses Chinese rocks, pheasants and peony flowers in a design that is clearly based on Chinese wall-papers. The border has a Western-style floral garland with a printed seaweed background.

Palampore of painted and dyed cotton chintz, Coromandel Coast, 1775-1800
Physical description
Rectangular palampore (wall-hanging or bed-cover) of painted and dyed cotton chintz. The design is of two flowering trees of Chinese type growing from rocky outcrops on a grassy mound. Two pheasants are in the foreground. The border has a floral swag design with a seaweed ground.
