The format of the flowering tree emerging from a rocky mound is typical of the chintz furnishings made in India for export to Europe in the 18th century. However, the colour palette of shades of red and violet, with no indigo, is more typical of those made on the southern Coromandel Coast for export to Sri Lanka. The violet shade is produced by combining mordants rather than by dyeing.
