Palampore

ca. 1725-1750 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This early 18th-century palampore (wall- or bed-hanging) was made for the Western market using a complex combination of drawing, resist-dyeing and mordanting. The flowering tree is typical of the chintz furnishings exported to Europe in the early 18th century. It includes elements of Chinese design, the rocky mound from which the tree springs, for example, which were popular at the time as part of the 'Chinoiserie' vogue.
