Local tribes took over some Roman crafts when the Roman Empire collapsed in Western Europe. In Germany and France, the Franks continued to make glass, although on a more basic level. This Frankish beaker must have been imported into Britain at the time, as it was excavated at Ashford, Kent. This type of beaker must be completely empty before it can be put down on its rim.
