Object history
Information in the acquisition register, "Portrait of the late Alfred Lowell Putnam, the eldest nephew of the great American poet James Rusell Lowell. He dies at Ferrara in 1855, at the age of 23 years, and is buried there. He was the great friend of the Bequeather in their youth; and the Bequeather had this portrait copied for the dead youth's mother, Mrs Mary Lowell Putnam, the sister of the poet. The portrait shows the face turned slightly to the left, clean-shaven, and with warm brown hair parted on the left. Black coat and stock; white shirt and open collar. The case bears the initials "A.L.P." in silver wire."

Presented by Frederick Mabron Walton, Esq., River House, Bray, Berkshire by the wish of the late Edward James Hardcastle, Esq. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.
