This photograph presents Václav Havel as a man of the people. Following the Velvet Revolution and the fall of the communist government, he was elected President of Czechoslovakia on 29 December 1989. A former author, playwright and anti-communist dissident, he was independent of any particular ideology and acted solely according to the moral dictates of his own conscience.
