This amulet case or 'ga'u' was used to contain rolled prayers and blessed or holy objects believed to protect the wearer from evil. Such boxes were worn suspended on a strap or sash across the shoulder or around the neck when travelling.

Ga'u, hammered sheet-copper with cast silver, containing image IM.20-1929, Tibet, 18th century.
Physical description
Ga'u made of hammered sheet-copper, with cast silver applied work around the aperture. The box is niche shaped with sliding front. The front of the box is slightly moulded and has the window-like aperture outlined with a rope-pattern in silver, it is otherwise plain.The box contains a bronze image IM.20-1929.
