This tablecloth is a commemorative piece. It was woven in 1707 in Kortrijk, the leading Flemish centre of linen damask production, to record the Spanish dominions of Archduke Charles of Austria. Charles was called Charles III of Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession when he was the candidate of Austria, Britain, Holland and their Allies against the French.
