This painting (and IS 38-1953) is from the celebrated 'Chawand' ragamala set, which is the earliest dated set of paintings that we know of from Rajasthan. The date, equivalent to AD 1605, is given in an inscription on the final page of the series, which is now in an Indian private collection. This colophon also tells us the name of the artist, Nasiruddin, and the place where the paintings were done - Chawand, which was the capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar from 1585 to 1609.
