Epergne is an early work by Clarke made of balanced silver strips with lifelike ceramic fruit hanging from the branches. An epergne is typically an ornamental centrepiece for a dining table and in Clarke’s version time is suspended as the fruit gently quiver.

Physical description | Epergne, silver consisting of a series of `U' shaped silver strips, connected by lateral strips of silver with a pin at each end. The pieces of `fruit', a combination of aplles and pears are made of ceramic and realistically painted. Each piece of `fruit' has a bow of silver-gilt wire which hooks on to a stainless steel strut in the form of an arc, upturned at one end and which is threaded through the top of the `U' shaped sections. |
