The shape of this water vessel is based on the Chinese 'Pilgrim Flask' and its earlier Central Asian antecedents. Before 1950 ironworking centres in eastern Tibet were well known for producing this type of vessel and for overlaying silver or gold to form designs on their surfaces, as seen here.

Pilgrim flask, iron with later brasswork additions, silver inlay decoration, Tibet, 18th century.
Physical description
Pilgrim flask and stopper, with later addition of S-shaped spout and S-shaped handle in the form of a dragon. The body is circular with flat sides, sunk in the middle. The vessel has a rectangular foot ring and tubular neck, with cylindrical stopper topped by an inverted lotus-flower. The sides, neck and foot are decoarted with silver inlay, of folitae scrollwork and Chinese cloud pattern. The hexagonal spout issues from a makra head. A section of one of the sides is reinforced by a plate of sheet brass.
