Object history note

The hat pins are shaped like thistles, which could allude to Lady Alexandra's Scottish links, as per her first marriage to Rear Admiral Clarence Dinsmore Howard-Johnston. (She married Trevor-Roper in 1954). She is known to have commissioned Fath to create a dress in the Johnston tartan in 1949.

Lady Alexandra Trevor-Roper favoured Fath for her wardrobe, and contributed the large portion of the V&A's Fath collection.
