Gallery label
The designer's intention was 'to represent the quintessential image of the English Rose as seen through the eyes of an immigrant'. Historical references are used imaginatively: the extended sleeves, which are open down the front seam, derive from the 16th-century long gowns and the pleated vents recall elements of the 18th-century mens coats. The pencil-slim skirt refers to the styles of the late 1940s and 50s. The tweed was specially commissioned from the South of Scotland Home Weavers.(1997)
