Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This small vase and its pair (Museum no. 1274A-1886) are stylistically very similar to another pair in the V&A’s collection (Museum nos 360&A-1880). Both sets are probably early examples of the work of the Japanese cloisonné artist Namikawa Yasuyuki.

With this pair, however, the surface of the vases is more regularly covered with wires. The tight overall application of the brass wires and the polychrome cloisonné enamel colour scheme perhaps show some further technological advances. The areas below the rim and above the base-plate are both elegantly decorated with stylised chrysanthemums. The black enamel and the butterflies on the central band of the vases later became key features of the work of Namikawa Yasuyuki.
