Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This panel is the work of the firm Arthur et Robert, which, aside from Réveillon, was the most important wallpaper manufacturer in France in the late 18th century. The firm was established by Arthur in 1772, later becoming Arthur et Grenard, and ultimately becoming Arthur et Robert around 1789 when Grenard retired and the paper merchant Francois Robert took his place. They specialised in making printed panels, screens and overdoors, many with landscape subjects. This panel (one of a pair, see E.599-2005) is one of their most ambitious productions, and is a precursor of the wall-size scenic decorations produced in France from the early 19th century.
