Lidded Jar
1860-1875 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The decoration on this lidded copper bowl illustrates some of the rapid advances in Japanese enamelling in the mid 19th century. The ground and other applied enamels are dull in colour, but they are more refined than those seen on other early examples. Here the brass wires are more decorative and less functional than on earlier cloisonné pieces.
The central panels contain sea-shells and seaweed on a ground decorated with peony and fine ‘karakusa’ (Chinese grass) and floral scrolls. The lid has a similar ground with panels of floral motifs. Its knob is in the shape of a lotus blossom. The interior of the body, lid and foot have all been lacquered in black.
