This drawing is by Jean-Baptiste Pillement (born Lyon 1728 and died Lyon, France 1808) for a design print in Recueil de differentes Fleurs de fantasie dans le gout chinois, Propres aux Manufacture d'étoffes de Soie et d'Indienne (collection of various fantastic flowers in the chinese taste, useful for the manufacture of silk textiles and printed calico) published in London in 1760. One of the most influential designers of the second half of the eighteenth century, Pillement worked throughout Europe over his long and productive career. Similar umbrella-shaped flowers can be seen in other designs for textiles, embroidered onto silk, in woven silk design and on printed textiles.
