Ring

1990 (made)

The Black Hoopoe Ring was commissioned by the donor in 1990 from Charlotte de Syllas (born 1946), a pre-eminent carver of hardstones. The donor requested a bird ring and Charlotte de Syllas chose to carve a hoopoe because she had admired hoopoes and the way they flashed their crests while she was working in Delhi.

'Black' in the title refers to the colour of the Edwards black jade (nephrite), and not to the natural colour of the hoopoe. The stone is a favourite of the artist and can be seen again in a necklace by her in the V&A's collection (M.17-2010 ).
