This engraving is from a set of 84 prints of architectural designs and ornaments by Matthias Darly, published between 1769 and 1770. It shows a detailed study of an Ionic entablature, with instructions on how to replicate it in three dimensions. The set, entitled Architectural Designs and Ornaments, includes prints of different architectural orders, such as windows, niches, friezes and vases.
The V&A print collection includes a number of prints by Darly (for example, Museum nos. E.2233-1908 and E.2245-1908). Darly’s aim was to disseminate the orders to artists and designers working in different fields. Prints like these would have been used by artisans as an example from which to work.
