Gallery label
This dress was in the final collection of Alexander McQueen before his untimely death in February 2010. The 16-piece collection was inspired by the art and skill involved in hand-worked garments. Sarah Burton, current head of design at the label, recalled how McQueen wanted to move away from the world of technology. 'He wanted to get back to the handcraft he loved, and the things that are being lost in the making of fashion... He was coming in every day, draping and cutting pieces on the stand.' The angel print on this dress recalls a relief sculpture, with the top half of the dress worked in an opaque woven structure which flows into the light transparent layers of the skirt.
