Engraving after Adam van Vianed (1570-1627) by Theodor van kessel of Utrecht from the set Modelles Artificiels de divers vaisseaux d'argent

The auricular style first appeared in Rome and Florence in the 1580s but was spread across Europe by a number of Dutch goldsmiths and designers, most notably the famous Utrecht goldsmiths Paul and Adam van Vianen. This ewer illustratres the auricular trick of making us see faces throughout the design.
