The left-hand vase represents day and has a copper body with an applied silver rim, inner neck-ring and base plate. The pale blue-green ground is decorated in silver yusen enamels with purple and white irises and other flowers by a rocks and a stylised swirling stream. There is subtle green shading to the white irises. The right-hand vase depicts a similar scene but this time at night. The copper body on this vase has an applied silver-gilt rim, inner neck-ring and base plate. The design, set against a very dark blue enamel ground, is again of purple and white irises beside rocks and a swirling stream, but here executed in gold yusen. Both vases have within concentric circles on their bases the engraved inscription Dai Nihon Aichi Hayashi saku (Made by Hayashi [Kodenji] of Aichi Prefecture, Great Japan) and the mark of Hayashi Kodenji.
