Vases
c.1920-1940 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Each of these two unmatched but similar looking vases has a silver rim; the base plate on the left-hand vase is silver and that of the right-hand vase is silver-gilt. The copper body of each vase has been hammered (nanako) and the ground covered with silver foil (ginbari) prior to an overall application of light turquoise enamel. The decoration is of summer (left) and autumn (right) flowers and grasses in polychrome silver yusen enamel: the flowers include convolvulus, gentian, various grasses, chrysanthemum and bell flower. This style of enamelling and decoration is often associated with Kumeno Teitarō. See Coben & Ferster plate 110 and Fairley, Japanese Enamels of the Meiji era nos.35 & 36 for similar pieces signed by Kumeno Teitarō.
