This poster was produced in Iran in the 1990's. It depicts Imam Ali, his two sons Hassan and Husayn and Ali's favoured slave Qanbar. The poster is typical of Shi'ia religious imagery because it depicts the holy family, who Shi'ia Muslims believed where the rightful successors to lead the Muslim people after Muhammad's death in 632AD. Religious posters are popular and are displayed in homes, offices and religious buildings in Iran, where the majority of the population are Shi'ia.

Physical description

Poster, laminated and printed in coloured inks. In the centre is a man (Ali) kneeling, behind him stands a young man (Qanbar) holding a double-bladed axe and on either side are two boys (Hassan to his right and Husayn to his left) also kneeling. Ali is wearing a green head covering and is holding a sword in a scabbard. In front of the group is a lion, side on, lying down. In the background is a desert landscape with an oasis, including palm trees, water and a distant mountain. in the top left corner is an inscription. The image is surrounded by a white border with a green line.
