Edwin Smith trained as an architect, thought of himself as a painter and only wryly admitted to being a photographer in the last year of his life. He took up photography in the mid 1930s, first concentrating on urban and social subjects, then specialising in poetic renderings of gardens, cottages, houses and churches. His photographs appeared in many publications and showed him to be a skilful interpreter of historic landscape and architecture.
