1001 Pages by Afruz Amighi was the winning work from the 2009 Jameel Prize competition. Created from a sheet of woven polyethylene it bears a complex pattern created with a stencil burner. The sheet is suspended from a strip of plexiglass a metre in front of a blank wall, and light is shone through it, creating a very beautiful effect: the complexity of the pattern is increased by the negative version that appears on the wall behind. The design reflects the rich traditions of the Islamic world, but also the violence to which it has been subjected both by its own inhabitants and outsiders.
