Gallery label
FLOOR-SPREAD In a Mughal palace, fine 'summer carpets' were used during the hot months. The flower design of this immense floor-covering created an indoor garden for people sitting on the floor. The poppies are typical of the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (ruled 1628-58), when naturalistic flower patterns were used widely, from manuscript borders to architecture. Cotton, printed and dyed Possibly Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, about 1650 V&A: IM.77-1938(03/10/2015-10/01/2016)
