Charcoal grey tapestry with polychrome motif. The grey background has a trompe l’oeil horizontal tear through which five coloured looped ribbons appear to project. The ribbons in pinks, yellows and burnt orange are white on the reverse. A black shadow effect appears beneath the ribbons. The artist's signature is incorporated at the lower corner proper left.
The artist Burhan Doğançay was fascintated with all forms of wall art and murals since the 1960s. In his 'Whispering Wall' series he worked with ribbons of colour and shadow effects to create the effect of a 3 dimensional image. This particular tapestry entitled 'Whispering Wall III' is one of a series which the artist created in collaboration with the Aubusson tapestry works in France.
