Brief description | Lugged tea jar, stoneware with natural-ash glaze, Bizen ware, Japan, 1550-1650 |
Physical description | Tea jar, with a round, full shape from which a short neck rises with a small everted rim. The simple shape, combined with the rich reddish purple colouration darkening into brown, was much admired. Two decorative small lug handles are also positioned on the powerfully rounded shoulders of the tea jar; while the rough texturised surface of the vessel is emphasised by natural ash glaze deposits. A large proportion of the vessel has been scorched due to its positioning in a wood-fired kiln. |
