Exercise Book

1826-1827 (written)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a child's exercise book from 1826, with examples of spelling and handwriting practice, that has been marked and commented on by a teacher in purple pen. The contents lean towards transcriptions of religious writing, or slogans such as "Abstain from vicious habits" and "Nature commonly prevails". The teacher's comments are not very encouraging, only remarking on the areas where Alice has made mistakes. The exercise book also contains some maths problems; these include different measurements, with one example, strangely for a child's exercise book, comparing alcohol measurements.

Object history
This exercise book was given to John Coston after the death of his cousin, Pete Coston, by his wife, in May 2008. Coston asked family members about who might have owned it, but the surname Pitcher was unknown to the rest of his family. There is a date written on the front page, 21 September 1826, and a note on the back reading 'M Ward Pitcher Dr to Alice Pitcher'.
