Volume containing landscape drawings in pen and ink and pencil depicting two separate trips, one up the Thames in 1792 and the other to Hastings in 1797. Sketches of the first trip include views of, at, or near Basildon, Buckland, Cliveden, Hardwick, Mapledurham, Oxford, Pangbourne, Purley Hall and Whitchurch, and they are all in pencil.
The 1797 series are mainly in pen and depict coastal scenes in and around Hastings as well as some sketches of boats. Some are washed in monochrome or colour. The volume also contains various MS notes relating to colour, and a list of 35 subjects 'to be made', 26 subjects 'made', a list of objects which Farington intended to take on his trip, including 2 drawing books, asphaltum box, umbrella, drawing stool, camera, glasses, great-coat, red box, trunk, sheet, a night-cap and a note about expenses. 55 leaves in total with at least one other torn out at some stage. Inscribed with titles on front and back cover and the date.
