Physical description

Sketchbook containing landscape drawings in pen and ink and pencil, with a monochrome wash, depicting houses amid trees, windmills, waterwheels, churches and rural scenes, sketched in the area of Bath. There are numerous MS notes containing descriptions of views in Killarney and copies of extracts from 17th century newspapers about coaches, alongside 18th century newspaper extracts such as advertisements from the Daily Advertiser on 26th July, 1749; a painting by Canaletto in the same paper from 30th July 1751; a copy of an advert from the London Chronicle, 17th April, 1762; details of an exhibition by the Society of Sign Painters; a copy of a notice in the Morning Post, 26th April 1775, of works by Hone; copies of extracts from newspapers about elephants and other animals; copies of extracts from the Morning Post, 1786, about Sir Ashon Lever's Holophusicon; a record of the death of a Mr Salmon, a famous 'waxworkman'; and details of an exhibition of works by Wright of Derby and Copley, amongst other notices. There are 80 leaves in total, with leaves 65 to 68 having been pasted in, and leaf 6 partially cut out. Other leaves have evidently, at some time, been removed.
