This print is from a portfolio titled Zum Beispiel: Lord Howe Island – for example. The works are printed by using different intaglio printing techniques. The term ‘intaglio’ is derived from the Italian word for ‘incised design’ and covers a range of printing techniques, such as etching, mezzotint and engraving. In intaglio techniques, the printing ink is forced into the grooves of the printing plate, beneath the areas that are to remain blank.
These works were inspired by the artist, Jôrg Schmeisser’s, visit to the Lord Howe Island off the western coast of Australia and show different forms from nature, such as plants and seashells. The delicate lines convey the fragile beauty of these organic subjects. The entire portfolio is held by the museum (Museum nos. E.327-2005).
