This box once formed part of the collections of Jules Soulages (1803 - 1856), a lawyer from Toulouse and an enthusiast for all things to do with the Italian Renaissance. His collections were posthumously exhibited at Marlborough House between December 1856 and January 1857, and subseqently acquired by this museum. Although Soulage was active when collecting Renaissance pieces was still very much a novelty, many of the pieces in his collections were heavily restored or fitted with later additions, like this example.
