Casket

ca. 1450 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Although bought in 1899 from Stefano Bardini, one of Italy's leading antique dealers of his day, and then thought to be Italian, this gesso-decorated box almost certainly came from Catalonia (Spain) and was made in about 1450. A number of similar boxes were decorated with characteristically bulbous figures and motifs in moulded gesso, with punch marks in the background, and often painted vermillion and partly gilded. As in Italy, courtly love stories taken from Medieval Romances were popular themes in Catalonia and thought suitable presents for lovers.
