Ring
late 18th century - early 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Nineteenth century customers could choose from a vast range of styles of rings - historically inspired, based on archaeological excavations, set with cameos, ivory scenes or miniature portraits. However, the majority of rings were probably much simpler gem-set rings, relying on the massed array of coloured gemstones for their appeal. As the Illustrated London News regretted in 1887, rings were set with 'fine stones set in straight rows with as much notion of beauty and originality in their arrangement as in an old fashioned box edging to a garden.'
The bezel of this ring is set with alternating rows of rubies and brilliant cut diamonds, creating a diagonal design.
