Place of origin |
This portrait image of General de Gaulle reinforces his authority as unopposed leader of the Free French resistance. He had moved from London to Algiers in late 1942 and several months later set up the Comité Francais de la Libération Nationale, becoming its sole chairman towards the end of 1943. The slogan is taken from the text of his Chirstmas message from Algiers on 24 December 1943. It was aimed at all French people, both at home and abroad, in an effort to persuade the various Resistance factions to cease operating independently and to unite against the common enemy - Axis powers generally, and Nazi Germany, specifically. The place of publication for this poster is unknown but was probably either France or Algeria.
