  • Photography Centre 2018-20: William Carrick (1827–78) Album of ‘Russian Types’ About 1860 Carrick was a Scottish photographer who worked in Russia. In 1859 he opened a studio in St Petersburg, where he made traditional studio portraits and documented Russia’s ordinary citizens and street vendors. He was a pioneer in bringing the street into the studio and his images of unnamed figures, recognisable by their trades and made in the carte-de-visite format, demonstrate an unusually sensitive approach to photo-ethnography.
