Ring

1800-1850 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This ring was described as seventeenth or eighteenth-century Russian when it was acquired by the Museum, with a group of other Russian jewellery, in 1866. The filigree motif used on the shoulders is certainly Russian, but it was usually used for the terminals of a filigree chain, of the kind worn by priests, in the seventeenth century. These chains continued in use among conservative and rural people, including priests, up to the nineteenth century, when archaic jewellery forms and silverwork techniques of all kinds were revived with the renewal of interest in Russian nationalism. This ring was probably made in the nineteenth century as part of that trend.
