Object history
This is called by Bartsch (in 'Peintre Graveur') a copy by Giovanni Antonio da Brescia, but he probably never had an opportunity of comparing the prints, for this is undoubtedly the finer work, and by Mantegna.
The Ceramics Collection contains a painted Italian maiolica panel dated 1523 from the Salting Bequest with a design based on the composition of this print. The museum number for this panel is C.2119-1910. Another impression of this print, acquired as part of the Ionides Bequest is numbered CAI.604.
