This ceremonial military costume of gold encrusted green and plum velvet was specially styled for a minister who served King Thibaw (r. 1878-1885), the last king of the Konbaung Dynasty, at the Court of Mandalay. Consisting of a long fitted robe, separate sleeveless jacket and spectacular "cloud collar". The quality of the velvet, its colour and degree of gold decoration defined the minister's rank, which he had been awarded by the King.

Object history
This military court costume was specially styled for a minister serving under King Thibaw (r. 1878-1885). Said to have been removed from the palace of King Thebaw at Mandalay during the Third Burmese War (1885).

Historical significance: The quality and degree of gold decoration signified the owner's rank and would have been authorised by the King.
Production
Claimed to have been removed from the palace at Mandalay at the time of King Thibaw's departure in 1885.
Attribution note: Style, decoration and technique refer to 19th century Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885).
