19th century (made)
Place of origin |
Single niche carpet
WARP: cream wool; Z3S; 20 threads to the inch (78 per dm). NB. new warps have been inserted (4 pairs and 2 single threads) in the lower plain weave and again at the bottom of the second band of field sprigs.
WEFT: white cotton, much knotted; Z3S; 2, occasionally 3, shoots after each row of knots; 14 knots to the inch (50 per dm).
PILE: wool; 10 colours: dark red, red, yellow, green (faded), very light green, dark blue, blue, light orange, dark brown, white; symmetrical knots (check anomalies* in eg. the inner border, bottom right at first white Z; inner border bottom left, at first white flower) tied around 2 warp threads; 140 knots to the sq. inch (1950 per sq. dm).
SIDE FINISH: both sides have one cord overcast in white cotton.
END FINISH: lower: incomplete (2.5 cms.) plain weave with white cotton; 7 cms. of fringe with 3 bands of offset knots forming a lattice. Upper: 2 cms. plain weave with white cotton and, in upper part, 1 row of plain soumak over 4 threads and back under 2, also in white cotton. The fringe as above.
DESIGN: field: white ground with dark blue lattice of diagonals; at their junctions a yellow-centred cross, the lattice framing 12 bands of varied floral sprigs, each band offset and having six or seven sprigs with six sprigs filling the niche; the lattice continuing in the spandrels to hold four sprigs and, on each side, a comb. The angular niche is outlined by a band of dark blue bearing small rosettes separated by a green Z motif.
Borders: there are five borders: from the inside:
a) very narrow, dark blue ground with tiny flowerheads, red or white in the lowr border but varied elsewhere.
b) reciprocal trefoil design in red and blue.
c) and e) dark blue ground, as niche band but with simplified flowers and multi-coloured Z motifs.
d) main border with red ground containing multi-coloured, angular, barred S motifs with triangles at their forked terminals.
Guard stripes: dark brown ground with small, white, diagonal blocks.
* with some very few apparently asymmetrical knots; open to the right, in eg. the inner border
