Haori (Kimono Jacket)
1921 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
In Japan, traditional clothing for men is fairly plain compared to that for women, which tends to be more brightly coloured and lavishly patterned. During the Edo period (1615-1868), however, there developed among those with money and style a fashion for wearing extravagant linings and under-garments. This taste for hidden patterns continued into the twentieth century, when motifs often related to Japan's rapid modernisation were used. The lining of this kimono jacket, or haori, bears an image commemorating the visit of Crown Prince Hirohito to Britain in 1921. It shows the battle ship Katori (which was built in the UK), with Japanese flag flying, and part of a newspaper clipping which announces that the Prince landed on British shores on 9th May 1921.
