This furnishing fabric was known as ‘The Monuments of Paris’. It shows four views of buildings in Paris: the Pont Neuf with the statue of Henri IV (in a rectangular frame); the east colonnade of the Louvre (in a rectangular frame); the Fountain of the Innocents (in a circular frame); and the Pantheon (in an octagonal frame). Its designer, Hippolyte Lebas, was an architect and had been involved in designing La Bourse, an austere and monumental building intended by Napoleon I to reflect the status of the imperial city. The same glorifying purpose lies behind this textile design.
