Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) was a Russian dancer, choreographer, and ballet director. Nureyev’s early training was in folk dance and ballet in Ufa and he began studying at the Leningrad Choreographic School (the Kirov school) when he was 17. He joined the Kirov Ballet as a soloist in 1958 but in 1961 appealed for political asylum in France and from that point on made his home in ‘the West’. He was a regular guest artist with the Royal Ballet (1962–77) and also made countless appearances with companies all over the world.

The Ropes of Time was a ballet created for Nureyev by the choreographer Rudy van Dantzig in 1970.
