The production was directed by Peter Hall and starred Albert Finney. Hamlet opened at the Old Vic on 10 December 1975, then transferred to the new National Theatre on the South Bank, opening on 16 March 1976 and becoming the inaugural production at the National's Lyttelton auditorium.
