Founded in 1970 in New York City by James Wines, SITE (Sculpture in the Environment) is an experimental, multi-disciplinary architecture and environmental art studio. It developed a hybrid architectural practice where environmental art was integrated into the built space and fabric of a building.
SITE's most productive collaboration of the 1970s was with BEST Products Inc., one of the largest mail order corporations in the USA. BEST commissioned SITE to create a series of retail outlets for them across the US, all of them in peripheral strip locations near major cities. The 'Forest' showroom was created for a site in Richmond, Virginia in 1980. In order to maintain and celebrate its densely wooded surroundings, the showroom is split with a 35 foot gap, separating the facade from the actual store, through which the vegetation has been allowed to penetrate.
