Wool and cotton carpet.

WARP: white cotton; Z4S3S; depressed; 20-28 threads per inch (96-116 per dm).

WEFT: white cotton; visible weft Z3S; concealed weft Z7S; 2 shoots after each row of knots. NB: There may be additional concealed wefts. The good condition of the carpet precludes further investigation. There are 11-13 knots per inch (41-51 per dm).

PILE: wool; 10 colours: red, light red, dark yellow, yellow, green, blue/green, dark blue, blue, light brown, white; asymmetrical, open to the left and tied around 2 threads; 144 knots per sq. inch [average] (2438 [average] per sq. dm).

SIDE FINISH: one cord oversewn with dark blue wool.

END FINISH: Lower end: very narrow band of plain weave with 2 parallel threads of white cotton per shoot, the final pass twined to secure groups of 4 warp threads and the 4 cms. fringe. On the plain weave are 2 rows of weft twining in red/dark blue and in red/green. Upper end: as lower.

DESIGN: Field: dark blue ground with four bands of three red palmettes and three bands of two. Each palmette rests on a curve of florets and each has three decorated light red botehs within a blue/green form. The palmettes alternate horizontally with stylised blue lilies supporting a green or white sprig which reaches up and into the curve of florets.

Main border: light brown ground with floral meander with red stems and red or blue leaves, the rosettes being predominantly dark yellow, blue and red.

Inner and outer borders: red ground with a floral meander in white, yellow, blue and green.
NB. a) singed ends to be seen on blue wool at back of lower border, and b) 3.5 cms. strip of leather facing sewn along each side.
