Comelli (1858-1925) was the house designer of the Royal Opera House from the late 1880s to the early 1920s. During this period he also worked for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and also designed costumes from a number of Gilbert&Sullivan productions.

Costume design in watercolour on board for 'Tony' in an unidentified production. The design is signed Comelli, 1920. It shows a full length image of a man dressed in a long, wide skirted grey jacket with brown trim at the collar and cuffs. This is worn over a white shirt (with matching neckcloth) and a long striped grey waistcoat. He also wears dark brown knee breeches and beige, side buttoning gaiters and a wide brimmed 'clerical style' black hat.
